Hacienda Sotuta de Peon is located 50 minutes from the city of Merida Yucatan, surrounded by lush vegetation and henequen plantations.

This hacienda represents the history of the henequen industry in Yucatan, it began operating in 1858 and was open for 100 years and then remained inactive for 3 decades and then was restored and renovated to its original conditions to show visitors what was the henequen boom era in Yucatan.

The economic wealth of Yucatan that brought with it the cultivation, industrialization and export of henequen to the world, generated the income of important foreign currency to the State of Yucatan, to the point of bringing it out of the acute economic crisis in which it found itself, originated by the indigenous uprising, better known as the Caste War.

In our tour you will go back to the history of Yucatan’s past, you will learn about the history of this wonderful hacienda, who founded it, who lived and operated it and where you will first visit the old main house of the hacienda, admiring its dining room, antique furniture, living room, bedrooms, corridors surrounded by lush trees.

Afterwards you will be shown step by step the process of the henequen leaf cultivation, the process of industrialization of the leaves of the plant and know the old restored machinery to see the process of making the ropes or bales of henequen, which was the great industry of Yucatan and its different types of ropes and thicknesses.

Afterwards you will ride on a wooden platform called a truk on rails pulled by a mule around the hacienda where you will see a typical Mayan house on the outskirts of the hacienda and then make a final stop at the cenote where you can swim in its crystalline waters and refresh yourself.

at the end of the tour you can have lunch in our restaurant if you want the complete package with lunch where you can enjoy the delights of Yucatecan gastronomy.
